HOW THICK, HOW DENSE AND WHICH ROOMS IS THE LION 42 CARPET FELT 10MM UNDERLAY FOR?
The Lion 42 Carpet Felt Underlay is 10mm thick and very dense. This makes it extremely durable so it’s ideal for contract carpet installations in public spaces like offices, hotels and restaurants. Felt products are so durable they often outlive the carpet itself.
At 10mm thick, the Lion 42 provides a good barrier between the carpet and the subfloor or floorboards beneath. This will extend the life of your carpet considerably, whilst also giving the added benefits of heat and sound insulation.
The Lion 42 is adaptable to the subfloor, it’s therefore a good choice if you have uneven floorboards or flags which would easily erode most other underlays. Felt underlays can also help to smooth out an uneven floorboard because it will naturally fill in the gaps.
HOW WILL THE LION 42 CARPET FELT UNDERLAY HELP WITH INSULATION?
The Lion Felt 42 is made from 100% natural materials such as wool and hair. This means it is naturally insulating so it will help to keep any room that little bit warmer.
An insulating underlay will prevent heat loss through the floor and it will also act as a barrier against draughty floorboards or a cold concrete subfloor.
LION 42 CARPET FELT UNDERLAY SOUND REDUCTION PROPERTIES
The Lion 42 is thick and dense so it has good sound reduction properties.
The type of noise that underlay is most effective at insulating is impact noise, so the sound of footsteps, jumping or banging.
This, along with the fact that it’s highly durable, makes it a great choice for high traffic public areas or multi-level buildings such as hotels and office blocks.
HOW IT FEELS: QUALITY VS VALUE
The design of the Lion 42 felt means it has a much longer lifespan than other products, such as PU foam for example.
This means if you need to change the carpet soon, you may not necessarily have to change the underlay when using this product, because it will still be in fantastic condition.
As a result, the Lion 42 Felt is a great investment, especially for public spaces which will receive a much higher volume of traffic than homes.

WHAT’S LION 42 CARPET UNDERLAY MADE FROM AND WHO MAKES IT?
Like the very first carpet underlays ever produced, the Lion 42 Felt is manufactured entirely from raw materials. This includes jute, wool, hair and even vegetable fibres.
This was extremely successful with old carpets which were traditionally sewn together, as the seams could bed into the underlay, so they were so longer visible.
Today, the Lion 42oz Felt has a similar effect on uneven sub-floors.
Because it is made from natural materials it is inherently fire-retardant (tested according to the BS5808: 1991 Specification for Underlays for Textile Floor Covering).
This is another reason why it is a great choice for contract carpet installations in public spaces.

A similar product to the Lion 50oz is the Extra Step Heavy Duty 6mm Contract Underlay.
Like the Lion 42 Felt, it is extremely hardwearing but it is thinner and easier to handle because it is made from PU Foam.
UNDERLAY FOR OTHER USES
If you are looking for a domestic product that is still highly durable but has a more luxurious feel, we would recommend the 9mm Magic Carpet or the Tredaire Softwalk 9mm.
Both of these are suitable for high traffic areas such as the hallway and stairs but they will feel softer underfoot.
